Blacksburg's Winter Lights Gets an Extra Hour This Year, and It Comes After the Parade

October 15, 2026

In 2024 and 2025, Blacksburg's Winter Lights evening was advertised as running from 3 to 8 p.m. The Holiday Parade stepped off at 7:30, so the posted window closed half an hour after the first float reached Main Street. The Town's calendar lists the 2026 event for Friday, December 4, from 3 to 9 p.m. The parade start time hasn't changed, so the new hour comes after the parade.

That changes how the whole Friday plays out. Each part of the evening starts at its own time, the street closures follow their own clock, and this year the rain date moves too.

Four Years of the Same Friday, Side by Side

The parade has started at 7:30 for years, and it still does. The changes are at the edges.

Year Date Posted festival window Parade start Weather date
2024 Friday, Dec. 6 3 to 8 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Not stated in Town notice
2025 Friday, Dec. 5 3 to 8 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 7:30 p.m.
2026 Friday, Dec. 4 3 to 9 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m.

The 2024 figures come from the Town's 2024 closure notice. The 2025 window comes from Downtown Blacksburg Inc.'s Holiday Market listing. A 2025 event listing gives that year's weather date. The 2026 date, theme, and weather date are all in the Town's September 10, 2026 letter to parade participants.

Downtown Blacksburg Inc. hasn't published the 2026 Holiday Market's hours yet. The 9 p.m. close is the Town's window for the whole event, and the vendor market may keep its own hours inside it.

Last Year's Schedule Is the Best Guide for Now

The 2026 letter confirms the main pieces. The Town will kick off the season downtown "with shopping, a tree lighting ceremony, and pictures with Santa at the Lyric." It doesn't give a time for the tree lighting. Last year's published program is the closest guide to the order of events, as Downtown Blacksburg Inc. and the Town laid it out for December 5, 2025:

  1. 3 p.m. The Holiday Market opens with more than 20 local vendors on College Avenue, and participating merchants hold holiday open houses.
  2. 4 p.m. Santa arrives at The Lyric Theatre.
  3. 4:30 p.m. The Holiday Spectacular Leapettes perform.
  4. 5 p.m. The Blacksburg Children's Chorale sings.
  5. 6 p.m. The tree lighting.
  6. 6:15 p.m. TUBACHRISTMAS, the 16th annual, on Henderson Lawn.
  7. 7:30 p.m. The parade.

On that schedule the official day ended at 8 p.m., so the last thing on it was a market starting to pack up while the parade went by. With the 2026 window running to 9 p.m., the evening no longer has to end with the parade. In 2025, Blacksburg Books stayed open late, served cookies and hot cider from 6:30 p.m., and offered a view of the parade. No downtown business has announced its 2026 hours yet. Each one sets its own.

The Tubas Arrive Before Most of the Crowd

TUBACHRISTMAS has the longest day of any act on the schedule. According to Virginia Tech's School of Performing Arts, registration opens at 3:45 p.m. with $10 due at the door. Rehearsal runs from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. at 185 Kent St., players break for dinner at Squires at 5:15, and the performance on Henderson Lawn starts at 6:15.

Any tuba or euphonium player can join, at any age or skill level. Players bring their own instrument and music book. Downtown Blacksburg Inc., the School of Performing Arts, and The Marching Virginians sponsor it. If you have an old euphonium in a closet, this is the one night a year it can join a downtown performance. The TUBACHRISTMAS page carries an older date stamp along with the 2026 details, so check it again closer to December.

The 6:15 performance sits between the 6 p.m. tree lighting and the 7:30 parade. Henderson Lawn is the busiest spot downtown for most of the hour before the parade.

The Street Closures Run on Their Own Schedule

The Town hasn't issued its 2026 closure notice yet. In 2024, the pattern went like this:

  • 11 a.m. Parking ends on College Avenue.
  • 3 p.m. College Avenue closes to traffic for the festival.
  • 6 p.m. Turner and Perry Streets close for parade lineup.
  • 7:15 p.m. Main Street and the intersections along the route close.

College Avenue was cleared hours before the festival opened. That year's parking cutoff on College Avenue came even before lunch.

The Town's parking page lists the downtown garages and lots and two-hour street parking. Paid public parking runs Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and fare-free Blacksburg Transit is listed as another way to get downtown. On December 4, paid hours end at 5 p.m., in the middle of the evening's schedule. Blacksburg Transit's service-level page says regular Friday service runs from 7 a.m. to 2:45 a.m. It doesn't say anything about parade-night detours, and no event-specific transit plan has been posted.

What the Route Asks of the People in It

The parade lines up on Turner Street NW and Perry Street. It runs down North Main Street from Turner Street to Eheart Street. The route has moved before. The Town's 2021 notice started the parade on Prices Fork Road at Stanger Street. In 2023 it moved to the current Turner-to-Eheart route, which the Town called a slight change from previous years. This year's theme is "Main Street Parade," which fits a route that stays on Main the whole way.

The deadline to enter a float, marching unit, or business vehicle is Friday, November 20, 2026, at 5 p.m. Motorcades are limited to one vehicle per business, and other entries such as horses are welcome. Entry forms go to the Parks and Recreation Department at 615 Patrick Henry Drive, and lineup instructions follow late in November. Several of the rules come straight from Main Street itself:

  • Floats must be less than 13 feet tall to fit under the power lines on Main Street.
  • Headlights stay off along the route.
  • Candy gets handed to spectators. Throwing it isn't allowed, because children may run into traffic.
  • Participants should bring a flashlight, since the end of the route has limited street lights.

The letter also includes this request:

"Please do not have a Santa in your parade entry; the town will have Santa there for sure."

If It Rains on Friday

The weather date is Saturday, December 5, at 7 p.m. That's half an hour earlier than the 2025 weather date. Saturday already has two events on the calendar.

The Blacksburg Farmers Market's Holiday Market runs that morning from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Market Square Park, at the corner of Roanoke Street and Draper Road. It's one of seven Saturday holiday markets: November 7, 14, 21, and 28, and December 5, 12, and 19. Vendors must be based within 50 miles of Blacksburg, and craft items must be handmade by the seller. In 2025, Downtown Blacksburg Inc. set up at the Farmers Market on Small Business Saturday to hand out its Downtown Shopping Wish Book and a Candyland Game Card. Shoppers could use the card at participating shops during Small Business Week for a chance at local prizes. Downtown Blacksburg Inc. hasn't confirmed a 2026 version.

At 4 p.m., the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra's Holiday Pops Spectacular plays the Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre at Moss Arts Center. The Virginia Tech event page currently lists it as sold out.

If the parade moves to Saturday, it starts three hours after the symphony begins and five hours after the market closes. With the earlier start this year, Saturday's parade begins 30 minutes before Friday's would have.

Calendars like this one change, and the Town's closure notice and Downtown Blacksburg Inc.'s market details usually come out close to the date.
